Your Fruits and Vegetables Can Give You Healthier Eyes

Eye conditions like macular degeneration can be prevented by antioxidants. Vitamins or supplements are not needed though. Instead, just keep a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables.
 

Many mothers would tell you that carrots will help your eyesight, and studies now show that your mother was right. This vibrant vegetable has many vitamins, and other colorful fruits and vegetables can help protect against some eye diseases.

Eye health and vision can be helped by antioxidants. These compounds help to stop damage to the eye because of free radical formations in the body, especially in the lens and retina, says Carl D. Obenauf, MD, a founding partner of North Central Eye Associates in Norwalk Ohio. So ask yourself how to get all the antioxidants you need.

Why Lutein and Zeaxanthin are Important

Two types of powerful antioxidants are Lutien and zeaxanthin according to Dr. Obenauf and a large study on the subject, also finding that these are also beneficial to eye diseases including but not limited to macular degeneration.

Benefits of antioxidants were demonstrated in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), which provide that in certain types of macular degeneration, were obtained by the use of a combination vitamin A as beta-carotene, vitamins E and C, and the minerals copper and zinc.

More studies have to be and are being conducted in hopes of determining what effects zeaxanthin, vitamins, and lutein have on eye health and vision. Evidence has only shown so far that these antioxidants help to prevent or even slow macular degeneration, which causes debilitating vision loss.

Ask yourself what else is or has been studied when it comes to nutrition, vitamins, and vision?

“Currently, a long-term study (AREDS II) is ongoing, studying the possible benefits of lutein and zeaxanthin and omega-3 fatty acids in macular degeneration,” says Obenauf. The study also tries to determine if these vitamins can help reduce the onset and progression of cataracts.

Another trial looks at the impact of low-dose zinc, and it covers the development and progression of macular degeneration.

“We hope AREDS II will give further insight as to treatment for macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of adult visual loss in the United States,” says Obenauf.

Eating to Get Healthier Eyes

Research so far points to huge benefits for eye health as well as good vision hen consuming lutein and zeaxanthin, but you may still wonder if supplements are better. Obenauf states that eye supplements are unnecessary to get all the vitamins needed.

“Considering all supplements, it is important to first have a well-balanced diet and obtain these and other nutrients naturally,” he states. “Currently there is not an existing scientific study that can state that the usage of these supplements will prevent macular degeneration.”

Ward off eye problems by eating the following foods, all of which are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin:

  • Squash
  • Spinach
  • Kiwi fruits
  • Kale
  • Grapes
  • Corn
